Rev. James D. McManus - The Civil
Rights Years, The Movement in Microcosm. 2008, 190
pages
Paul Wahrhaftig
$16.95
While there are many nationally recognized heroes of the Civil rights Movement, little is known of the unheralded rural and small town activists who struggled to make Civil Rights a reality in their corner of the nation. The Rev. J.D. McManus was one. His amazing story gives us new insights into the realities of organizing for, and implementing civil rights in the rural and small town South.
Reviews
“I didn’t always agree with everything
J.D. McManus did as he worked his magic on the authorities and his
neighbors, but I couldn’t help admiring his techniques.
He did get things done and they were important not only to
his community but well beyond.
And therefore it is important that this book ave as wide a
circulation as possible. “ Sam Legg, American Friends Service
Committee
“Embrace the legacy, escape the leprosy” Pageland Progressive, January 9 2007 “Wahrhaftig quotes this sage and fearless man’s analysis of integration in the late ‘70s. ‘It’s just like leprosy. You might tame it but them spots is still there. The old time segregation, it’s still grabbing at you. His words … are prophetic now as the ‘leprosy‘ of segregation is spreading again." Evelyn D. Ellis
Community Dispute Resolution
Empowerment and Social Justice - The Origins History and Future of a
Movement, NACFM Press 2004, 109 pages
Paul Wahrhaftig
$16.95
From Paul Wahrhaftig's perspective, conflict resolution is "more than a profession, it is a social movement." Community Dispute Resolution, Empowerment and Social Justice traces the history and development of this "movement" through the eyes of the author, who recounts his own experiences and offers his insights along the way. In doing so, Wahrhaftig hopes to provide a historical context from which to understand the origins of Community Dispute Resolution (CDR) and to stimulate "creative thought" on how to better implement the potential for social change he sees in the CDR "movement."

Groups and Conflict Resolution 1990, 160
pages
Hizakias Assefa, Paul Wahrhaftig
$16.95
In the nearly twenty years of publication
The MOVE Crisis in
Philadelphia has become a classic text for those learning how to
handle large group conflicts.
Members of MOVE, the predominately Black counter-cultural
group that was attacked and fire-bombed
by Philadelphia police IN 1985,
cite it as the most accurate analysis available of MOVE
and its motivation in the conflict.
This book helped change the post conflict anal analysis from
“What level of violence is appropriate when a party is too crazy or
too political to negotiate?” to “How can you negotiate with a party
whom you feel is too crazy or too political to negotiate with?“

A Networker’s Journey,
by Paul Wahrhaftig, Fickle Press 2011 , 27 pages
-
For over 30 years Wahrhaftig built and maintained networks of conflict resolvers locally, nationally, and internationally. His retrospective analysis with long range perspective should convince skeptics that networking has a tangible positive impact on organizing for social change. This booklet is written for potential networkers and for funders who deny networking funds because, “We don’t fund confereneces.”

ALMA LAVENSON PHOTOGRAPHS, by Susan Ehrens, Wildwood Arts, 1990. 107 Pages 10”x12”
This convenient large format, soft cover book is the definitive published collection of images by this accomplished West Coast photographer. The pictures and accompanying bibliographical text cover a large part of the 20th century – pivotal years in the advancement of the art of photography. A life long friend and colleague of Imogine Cunningham, Consuelo Kanaga and Edward Weston, in 1932 Wahrhaftig was invited to exhibit with the Group f64. This exhibit established the ethic of modern, sharp focus photography .
Her pictures particularly reflect the mood of the 1930s and 1940s. The industrial expansion provided a powerful arena for her photographs (Union Oil Tanks), the wonders of scientific advances drew her attention (Sweating Glass), and she managed to capture the dignity of her human subjects (San Ildofenso Indioans) . Regardless of her subject matter her photographs have a strong sense of composition. From 1930 to 1968, Lavenson photographed Mother Lode communities, primarily focusing her large-format camera on the historical buildings of the Gold Rush-era. She continued to be active in her field until her death in 1989 at age 92.

Table Talk not only succeeds in intimately involving the reader in the bargaining process, buty it presents a brilliantly accurate portrayal of the interpersonal dynamics among those who bargain as well as those persons who are behind the scene players

Trying Times by James Q Harty, 278 pages, EduPRESS 2007, distributed by Fickle Press
$16.95
As a practitioner of collaborative conflict resolution I found Table Talk cast me into the midst of the world of power negotiations. It is a world of offer, deny, counter-offer, deny….By the time I was half way through in my mind I was screaming “Won’t someone ask ‘Why?’” That question comes into play as Harty explores an interest based problem solving approach to the conflict in Trying Times.
